Meisha woke that morning to the sound of her new traveling companion's happy trilling. It had seemed perpetually cheerful when awake, so that wasn't a surprise. Rolling onto her side, she tried to wrap herself further into her traveling cloak-turned-blanket to try to ignore the creature for a while longer. It was only the jangling of something metallic against the bonelike mask it wore over it's face (or WAS it bone? She wasn't sure, and the creature squalled and shrieked and fought her when she tried to get too close to it to find out for sure) that caused her to snap to attention.

Sitting up, the sight that met her eyes confirmed her suspicions. The little grey monster was chirruping cheerfully, rolling around in the dust near what remained of last night's campfire wrapped in her headscarf. The small coins sewn onto the edging were clinking against it's head, adding to the noise. When it noticed her, it paused, chirring at her curiously.

"Were you digging in my pack again?" Getting to her feet, she glared at the tiny beast. "Give that back!" She made a lunge for her scarf, but the creature simply cheeped happily and rolled out of her reach, pleased with this new game. It got to its feet and scuttled around the camp, the scarf clutched in it's tiny front claws as it ran.

It took three circuits around the camp before the creature tripped over the scarf and landed in a heap. It trilled in alarm and tried to scramble upright, but Miesha had lunged again and caught it by the tail. Hauling the creature aloft, she tried with her other hand to extract her scarf before the creature ruined it.

"There there," she muttered to the irate creature, trying to ignore its flailing and squawks. "It'll just take a few seconds." Working quickly, she seperated scarf from beast. As she did, however, she once more brushed her fingers against the creature's head, coming into contact with the mask it wore.

Instantly the creature wailed loudly, curling in on itself. The sudden movement and sound startled Meisha, who dropped the creature. It rolled on the ground, shrieking in seeming agony at her touch. Meisha stared at it, wondering what could possibly cause the creature so much distress.

As had happened before, the creature's fit subsided quickly. There was a moment of silence as it picked itself up off the ground, then Meisha's world exploded with a scream that had to belong to the largest mountain eagle in existance, her mind reasoned, and then there was an enormous dark blur that grabbed her, then she remembered no more.
